aftercare instructions

Before touching your piercing

• Ensure that the area that you will be using is disinfected and clear.• Wash your hands with antibacterial soap and pat dry with a clean paper towel.• DO NOT touch your piercings with dirty hands!

Cleaning your piercing

• Wash your hands with antibacterial soap and dry with a paper towel.• Use saline spray or warm water and a gentle antibacterial soap to flush and clean your piercing.• Dry with a paper towel or piece of gauze. Avoid towels or any fabric, which can harbor bacteria that can enter your new piercing.

What is normal?

Initially, there may be bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness, or bruising. This is completely normal, and you have nothing to worry about.During Healing, there may be itching, dryness, some discoloration, and a secretion of a whitish-yellow fluid that will form a crust around the piercing. Do not twist, pull, or rotate your piercing during this time!Piercings heal from the inside out, so even though your piercing may look healed on the outside, give it some more time to fully heal on the inside! Be patient and keep it clean! After Healing, the jewelry may not move as freely as before, but don’t force it! Cleaning your piercing as part of your daily hygiene can help them stay clean!

What to avoid

• Do not clean your piercing with alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, iodine, or any harsh products as these could damage cells and delay healing.• Avoid over cleaning. This can delay healing and cause unnecessary irritation.• Avoid undue trauma such as friction, excessive motion of the area, playing with jewelry, and vigorous cleaning. This can cause irritation and unsightly and uncomfortable scar tissue, migration, or rejection of your new piercing.• Avoid all oral contact or contact with other bodily fluids. This can cause irritation and/or infection of your new piercing.• Avoid submerging your new piercing in bodies of water such as lakes, pools, oceans, hot tubs, bathtubs, etc. You can protect your new piercing with Nexcare waterproof bandage, Tegaderm transparent dressing, or something similar.• Avoid all beauty and personal care products around and on your new piercing, such as makeup, lotions, body sprays, etc.•Do not hang charms or any object from your piercings until they are fully healed.• Avoid sleeping on your new ear piercings, especially cartilage piercings. Use a piercing pillow for your ears!• Do not pick any built up crusties on your piercings! This is essentially a scab and aids in the healing of your piercing. It is okay if they are removed during a shower or cleaning as they would have been softened and loosened by the water.

Healthy Habits for Healing

• Get plenty of sleep! At least 7-9 hours a night for optimal immune function and healing.• Drink plenty of water! Hydration is essential for healing and tissue health.• Eat a balanced diet of nutritious Whole Foods. Avoid fast foods!• Avoid or minimize emotional stress!• Avoid an excess of caffeine or alcohol.• We do not suggest smoking, especially with fresh oral piercings! Smoking suppresses immune function.

Downsizing

It is crucial to downsize your jewelry once the initial healing period is over!If you fail to downsize your piercing, you run the risk of irritation, snagging, migration, irritation bumps, and rejection.
